I had an issue with too many plastic containers going to the recycling bin everyday because we love to eat yogurt. I am also very health conscious and I do put maple syrup on my yogurt to sweeten it already. Then a friend at work told me how easy it was to make my own homemade yogurt...and boy is it easy AND DELICIOUSSSSSSSSS.
So here is my recipe and you can find many other ideas on the web.
You need: milk, plain yogurt with active bacteria, pot, kitchen thermometer and a Slow cooker.
I put my milk I use 1% in a pot and bring it slowly to a boil at 185 degree.
Then I pour the milk in a large plastic container with a lid and stick that in cold water in the sink to let it cool down to 110 degrees. I then add 3 tbl spoons of plain yogurt. ( make sure the yogurt is at room temperature because you do not want to cool down your milk below 110.
Then for the next part I use my slow cooker, other people use different techniques.
I close the lid on my plastic container and put it in the slow cooker set up at warm filled half way with water. This will hold the water at about 110. I leave my thermometer in the water to make sure my temperature does not go too high. After a couple of hours I turn the slow cooker off, put a large towel on top to keep warm and leave it there over night.
Do not touch, be patient, leave it alone for those 6-8 hours.
The result should be a white large piece of yogurt in your bowl covered in a greenish water liquid. Get rid of the liquid and your yogurt is ready. You can use a cheese cloth or cotton to squeeze more water out for a thicker yogurt. (that is what I do)
Keep it in the fridge in a covered container...add a bit of fruits and MAPLE SYRUP, try different flavors and enjoy.
For your next batch you can use your own yogurt to mix in the batch.
